I would like to thank Sharon for giving me the pleasure of addressing my opionions on the Yorkshire Terrier. I got into showing dogs and horses very early in my youth with exhibits and breeding from 1958. My dad was a horseman and we successfully made several national ARABIAN PARK HORSE CHAMPIONS. My first show dog was in actuality a "Great Dane". After he antiqued my mothers furniture my dad came home with a Yorkshire Terrier and Pom, and the beautiful Dane went back to his breeder. The best part of it was meeting LENA BASQUTTE the GREAT DANE QUEEN. She was so full of knowledge with a very colorful life back to her days as a silent film star being married to JACK WARNER, of WARNER BROTHERS. Ijust loved every minute of her. Then the poodle bug started. I had dual residence in LOD ANGELES and eastern Ohio as my parents lived in the two different states. I would have to say the most influential person I ever met in dogs was PAMELA INGRAM OF THE MUCH FAMED SASSAFRAS Poodles. I would go up to TOPANGA CANYON at her home and sit ofr hours following her aroundlistening and learning. She was so intelligent, artistic and focused, I can honestly say I have never met another person in dogs quite like her. I will certainly never forget her or her influence she had on me and I was just in my teen years. Who would ever imagine a flaming red Poodle or the color of an orange? I really wish the Yorkshire Terrier breeders would spend a little time withe the Poodle people. NO ONE MASTERED COLOR IN ANY BREED LIKE THE COLOR BREEDING IN POODLES. Sharing this knowledge is DOROTHY NAEGELE'S of the NORTHSHIRE prefix who also was a very successful breeder of the SHIH TZU. The professional handler GYLNETTE CASS was also a Poodle breeder, as well as Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese. Ask her about color and soundness; the two go hand in hand. Particular colors share particular faults with the DARKER DOGS ALWAYS BEING MORE SOUND IN MUSCLE BONE AND HEALTH. On a return trip from Holland my dad brought back with him a Shih Tzu from ETA PAUPTIT von der oranje manage prefix and the SHIH TZU became another interest. I bred one of AMERICA"S most influential sires, the Legendary CH>PARQUINS PRETTY BOY FLOYD in which I Co-owned with JAY AMON who also bred AFGAN HOUNDS and Yorkshires. Outside the dog world I worked as a professional actor, singer and dancer and worked internationally with fashion and hair design ans was STYLES DIRECTOR for some of the most famous salons on RODEO DR. BEVERLY HILLS. I am also a certified astrologer and have written on this subject worldwide and to this day I am a constant student of astrology. I really wish the breeders of today would give more recognition, respect and credit to those who came before us. they were so knowlegeable with pedigrees, recognizing "breed type" to particular bloodlines, linebreeding and inbreeding with tremendous success. These breeders were true ARTISTS and DEVOTEES of the breed. Creatively individual not "MIMIC'S" or just mixing several lines. What amazes me most is the self-proclaimed experts with little or no pedigree of their own. The whole pedigree is everyone and anyone's but theirs. I was always taught that a breeder without at least six generations of their own line had no right to claim it as theirs but instead a commercial mix. Dedicated breeders labored many years to house enough dogs to create their own line and were focused on what they believe correct or proper, this should never be confused with those who have not. Give the credit where credit is due. Commercial marketers don't have their own linebred pedigree but reap the benefits of everyone else's work. I would like to see this breed very square with a distinctive small elegant head and face with its small "working ears" on a sound body wrapped in a DARK LUXURIOUS silk coat full of its fiery intelligence, athletic ability along with its stylish presence and happy ways.
1. What is the most defining physical characteristic of your breed? Beautiful, glamorous extroverts in a most unique compact size. The hair and color absolutely breathtaking.
2. Which behavioral characteristic most typifies your breed? Human like intelligence, constant animation and absolute independence!
3. What is the single biggest misconception about your breed? Color, color, color! You have it or you don't! Dark steel blue not medium. Today is gray and silver! It is unacceptable, contrary to the highly misinformed myth. Blue dogs as well as black dogs have blue skin. gray and silver dogs do not. No dog, no breed and/or animal can be termed genetically blue without blue skin. No fine chef will give away his secret ingredients - I don't care who he is. Why then would the british tell you the "key trick" to the blue color? Wake up! If the action is on 2nd Ave they'll tell you to go to third! The blind leads the blind here. Having had my first Yorkshire Terrier in 1958, I have also had the pleasure of meeting, enjoying the company and sharing the knowledge of the old masters Connie Hutchin Progresso, Mrs. Swan Invincia, D. Rositer Yorlfold, Mrs. Hayes Chantmarles, David Stroud Macstrouds and last but not least Elsie Gilbert of famed Tzumio prefix. These old gals would share in the laughter and sportsmanship of fibbing.
